{"id":1222,"date":"2012-05-23T22:20:37","date_gmt":"2012-05-24T03:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/civilsocietytrust.org\/blog\/?p=1222"},"modified":"2012-06-05T22:24:19","modified_gmt":"2012-06-06T03:24:19","slug":"we-need-market-forces-in-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/civilsocietytrust.org\/blog\/2012\/05\/23\/we-need-market-forces-in-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"We Need Market Forces In Healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve had more than my share of exposure to the U.S. healthcare industry over the last several months.\u00a0 That and other dramatics that people call life explain my disappearance from these pages since February.<\/p>\n<p>About two years after being diagnosed with carcinoid tumors, in what we later learned was an already very advanced stage,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oca.org\/in-memoriam\/deacon-john-zarras\" target=\"_blank\">my father passed away<\/a>\u00a0this past April 1.\u00a0 Things began to more rapidly go downhill in mid-February, and with that, the family pulled out all the stops in support, including lengthy hospital visits.<\/p>\n<p>This is a close relative of the cancer that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/steve-jobs\/\">Steve Jobs<\/a>\u00a0succumbed to.\u00a0 In his case, what is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-2144168\/Ashton-Kutcher-steps-character-late-Apple-genius-Steve-film-set.html\" target=\"_blank\">still commonly reported<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cpancreatic cancer\u201d and\/or \u201cliver cancer\u201d would be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.caringforcarcinoid.org\/news\/statement-caring-carcinoid-foundation-about-passing-of-steve-jobs\" target=\"_blank\">more accurately described as carcinoid tumors<\/a>\u00a0<em>in<\/em>\u00a0his pancreas, and his liver, and probably elsewhere within his abdomen.\u00a0\u00a0 We all remember Jobs\u2019 disturbingly gaunt look of extreme weight loss \u2013 I watched the same thing happen with my dad.\u00a0 It is a cruel disease.<\/p>\n<p>To further complicate matters, exactly one year ago, and one year into my dad\u2019s situation, I found myself calling 9-1-1 at 1 a.m. with severe abdominal pain.\u00a0 About 16 hours later, I awoke from a surgery to learn I had lost 14 inches of small intestine containing nine carcinoid tumors (I would later learn that I likely had these tumors for as long as ten years, and in my dad\u2019s case, twenty), the biggest of which had caused a total obstruction.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_617\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Institutes_of_Health\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs-images.forbes.com\/deanzarras\/files\/2012\/05\/NIHClinicalResearchCenter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Clinical Research Center at the National Institutes of Health<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Continue reading at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/deanzarras\/2012\/05\/22\/we-need-market-forces-in-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes Opinions&#8230;<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve had more than my share of exposure to the U.S. healthcare industry over the last several months.\u00a0 That and other dramatics that people call life explain my disappearance from these pages since February.
